The North Babylon Fire Co. was alerted to a working house fire at 66 Schenectady Ave. September 4, 2010. A Wyandanch Fire Co. Chief in the area noticed the smoke and had Babylon Central Central Fire Alarm dispatch North Babylon. Arriving units found heavy smoke was pushing from the house as heavy fire burned in the rear of the house on a deck, that was impinging on a large propane tank. Firefighters pushed lines into the house but were pulled out a short time later as conditions worsened and went to an exterior attack. The fire was extinguished with multiple hand lines and two deck guns in about an hour with no serious injuries reported. Multiple mutual aid depts. and ambulance corps were called to the scene. The house was condemned by the Town of Babylon three weeks prior to the fire and anyone living there was not supposed to be there, as there was no power to the house, generators were used to supply electricity. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
