| At approximately 4:36pm the North Babylon Vol. Fire Company was alerted by Babylon Central Fire Alarm of a reported structure fire in the vicinity of Little East Neck Rd. and Silver Street. While en route, Chief Jordan was advised by dispatch that they were taking numerous calls and Suffolk County Police were on scene reporting heavy fire coming out the windows. First arriving units were met with a heavy fire condition and quickly stretched multiple lines. Firefighters made an agressive attack into the structure and were met with extremely dangerous conditions. Command then made the decision to pull all members out of the building and begin an exterior attack with 2 tower ladders and multiple handlines. Once the heavy fire was extinguished, units were able to re-enter and put out the remaining pockets of fire and begin primary and secondary searches, locating one victim on the second floor of the structure who succumbed to their injuries. There was a total of 3 tenants transported to area hospitals with non life threatening injuries.
The fire took approximately 2 hours to bring under control. All units were under the command of Chief Thomas Jordan. The fire is still under investigation by the SCPD Arson Squad and the Town of Babylon Fire Marshal's Office.
Multiple mutual aid agencies were requested for assistance to the scene: Babylon Village, East Farmingdale, West Babylon, West Islip, Deer Park and Wyandanch Fire Departments, as well as the Wyandanch Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corps. The Bay Shore and Babylon Fire Departments as well as the Bayshore Brightwaters Ambulance Corps stood by at our Headquarters answering additional alarms.
